Alcoholism is a disease. You have alcoholism if all 3 of the following are true:
- Your drinking is causing problems in your life, such as:
- Problems at work.
- Problems at home.
- Problems in your relationships.
- Problems with your health.
- You realize that it's causing problems.
- You continue to drink.
Definition of Excessive Drinking
You are drinking excessively if any of the following is true:
- You are a man, and you:
- Drink more than 2 drinks a day.
- Drink more than 10 drinks a week.
- Have drunk more than 4 drinks in one sitting in the past month.
- You are a woman, and you:
- Drink more than 1 drink a day.
- Drink more than 7 drinks a week.
- Have drunk more than 3 drinks in one sitting in the past month.
