Definition of Alcoholism

Alcoholism is a disease. You have alcoholism if all 3 of the following are true:

  1. Your drinking is causing problems in your life, such as:
    • Problems at work.
    • Problems at home.
    • Problems in your relationships.
    • Problems with your health.
  2. You realize that it's causing problems.
  3. You continue to drink.

Definition of Excessive Drinking

You are drinking excessively if any of the following is true:

  1. You are a man, and you:
    • Drink more than 2 drinks a day.
    • Drink more than 10 drinks a week.
    • Have drunk more than 4 drinks in one sitting in the past month.
  2. You are a woman, and you:
    • Drink more than 1 drink a day.
    • Drink more than 7 drinks a week.
    • Have drunk more than 3 drinks in one sitting in the past month.

Have people annoyed you by criticizing your drinking?
Have you ever felt bad or guilty about your drinking?
Have you ever had a drink first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or get rid of a hangover?
